Did you get your flu shot yet? Each year, Ortivus provides each of its employees with a wellness check which includes complimentary flu vaccines; however there are no flu vaccines for us. It seems this year, the flu vaccines are in short supply and now even cats are catching this crazy virus. Yep, that’s right, here in Iowa a 13 year old cat was tested positive for the H1N1 virus. However, the cable news channels are full of outrage at the fact that Wall Street firms such as Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan have received thousands of doses of the H1N1 vaccine, while shortages across the country are preventing pregnant women and high –risk children from receiving their shots first.
With flu vaccines in such short supply, Google is stepping up to help people find places to get immunized; they have a new application called the flu shot finder for Google Maps. Flu shot finder is at www.google.com/flushot and it works very much like other Google Map applications. You enter your zip code and press the “Go” button and the application places icons on a map showing where to find flu shots in your area. The icons are shaped like hypodermic needles and color coded: Red for seasonal flu, blue for H1N1 shots and 2 toned for both.
I tried our zip code and unfortunately there still are no seasonal flu shots available but this tool will allow you to check availability from your home or office and save the phone call to the clinic. By the way, the cat has fully recovered.
