When I think of using technology to help us live better, my thoughts are of new age prosthetics and assisting devices such as scooters and hand controls for cars. As with everything else, each day brings with it change and one more change we may not even be thinking about is the change to the computer you are using right now. One big change is how medical records are being shared with EMS personnel in Oklahoma. The Associated Press calls this the “Emergency health alerts for the Facebook generation”. The Web-based registry, InvisableBraclet.org started in Oklahoma and now attempts to go nationwide. For $5 a year, basic health information and up to 10 emergency contacts are stored under a computer-assigned PIN number that's kept on a wallet card with your driver's license, a keychain or a sticker on an insurance card.
Jim Finger, president of the AAA says, “For millions of Americans, iB will, and should, become an essential. This method of knowledge sharing between EMS providers and patients could be just the thing that saves more lives and relieves anxiety for family members.” AAA-affiliated EMS providers will be the first to support the national rollout of the iB Web service. After the initial launch, which will be announced early in 2010, other EMS providers not currently affiliated with the AAA will have the opportunity to join the iB Medic Network.
To see for yourself how technology is saving lives – using 5 minutes, spending 5 dollars you might save 1 life.
